Recent Projects

Established in 1998, LNA has completed over 130 projects for the maritime industry, and built up a solid reputation with a loyal client list.

Some of our most recent projects include:

2009: Centaur, DMS
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

LNA was involved in the historic search and location of the shipwrecked Centaur. Torpedoed in 1943 the whereabouts of the hospital ship was unknown until a search and rescue team found it more than 2 km under the waves in an area of high turbulence; due east of Moreton Island. LNA provided engineering support and technical calculations to modify the DMS submarine search and rescue vessel, so that it could carry the necessary equipment during all phases of the project.

2008-2009: M/S Spirit of Tasmania II, TT Line, Tasmania
Skills Employed: Marine Interior Design, Project Management

The project brief required the refurbishment of public spaces including the a la carte restaurant, the bar and cafe area, the reception area, all corridors, stairways and landings, the conversion of a dance area to a family lounge and opening up the gaming area.

The clients particularly appreciated the use of 3D visualisation during the presentation process, which enabled the Board of Directors to see exactly what the areas would look like, rather than relying on imagination and traditional drawing techniques.

LNA recognised that the ship travels in the Bass Strait which can be grey and inhospitable, and particular emphasis was placed on creating an atmosphere of warmth and light onboard. Innovative approaches included installing a glass wall in the gaming area to let in more light and modifying the ceiling in the family lounge to install stunning feature lighting. Custom made specialist materials were used and new furniture designed. Carpets and upholstery were co-ordinated and inspired by the Tasmanian landscape. This theme was continued in the restaurant where artworks were specially commissioned from the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery to showcase Tasmanian nature. Local materials were sourced where ever possible and 80% of the contractors used were Tasmanian companies.

LNA completely project managed the job: ordering and purchasing all the materials, tracking and scheduling the arrival and installation of all components.

2008: Submarine Rescue Vessel
Skills Employed: Feasibility Consultancy, Naval Architecture, Ship Stability

LNA was engaged in the role of a feasibility consultant, with a scope which covered naval architecture and stability calculations. Suitable vessels were identified for conversion, and tender documentation was completed which covered design, project calculations, intact and damage stability analysis which used new SOLAS probabilistic damage stability requirements, as well as general technical advice.

2007-2008: D.E.V. Arahura, KiwiRail
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture, Ship Stability

The Arahura was built in 1983 and operates as a passenger rail and RoRo ferry in the Cook Strait, Marlborough Sounds. The brief was to increase the payload and ensure the latest stability requirements were met. The project involved naval architecture and stability and strength calculations, which lead to supervision in Singapore of a major modification to the vessel.

LNA undertook a comprehensive Safety Analysis report, completed in-depth and intricate modelling, and worked up a comprehensive design, which was then completed under our technical supervision.

The project involved removing superstructure, making modifications to improve cross-flooding arrangements, constructing watertight sub-divisions, relocating crew accommodation, creating new food and beverage outlets for passengers, and providing more space for trailer and camper-van capacity.

2007: M/S Spirit of Tasmania I and II, TT Line, Tasmania
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

Vehicle Deck Modifications: LNA undertook design and supervision of the project. The objective was to increase the car carrying capacity, and to increase protection of high value freight. This was achieved by fitting new platform decks and covering the aft part of the upper vehicle deck with a light structural roof.

2007: Alltrans, Rio Tinto
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

This project involved design and supervision for crack repairs.

2006-2007: Princess of Norway and King of Scandinavia, DFDS Seaways
Skills Employed: Ship Stability

LNA were contracted to undertake detailed computer modelling and stability calculations, which were then presented to the Danish Maritime Authority for approval. The strategy was to increase freight carrying capacity without structural modifications. The modelling was successful and approved.

2006: Kaitaki, Toll NZ
Skills Employed: Marine Interior Design

Toll NZ required design work for improved passenger facilities including a new family lounge, toddlers play area, business class lounge, public toilet facilities and a cinema complex. The design process also implemented comprehensive 3D image modelling, which enabled clients to see the end results before committing to them.

2006: M/S Spirit of Tasmania I and II, TT Line, Tasmania
Skills Employed: Marine Interior Design

The scope of work included the designing and supervision of construction of a new play area for toddlers. The ambience was completed with a unique, specially commissioned mural.

2006: CEC STAR - 1150 TEU Container Vessel
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

This project involved design and supervision in Singapore for crack repairs.

2006: Canterbury, RNZN
Skills Employed: Ship Stability

LNA fitted new onboard loading / stability onboard NAPA software. This involved creating the initial 3D ship model, validation to LR and MoD requirements, installation and training of the crew.

2006: RSV Aurora Australis, P&O Maritime
Skills Employed: Feasibility Consultancy, Naval Architecture, Marine Interior Design

P&O Maritime required a feasibility study and initial designs for conversion of Aurora Australis to passenger ship standard. Tasks involved detailed fire safety, life saving and damage stability investigations as well as marine interior design for the lounge area, cabins and the bridge deck.

2005-2006: Oceanic Viking, P&O Maritime Services
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture, Ship Stability

A number of consultancies were briefed on a conversion project for a special purpose ship. The solutions presented by LNA proved to be the most cost effective and so LNA was contracted to complete the entire job, which included detailed designs, computer modelling and calculations, as well as onsite supervision in Singapore.

2005: 1850 TEU Container Vessel, Turkish Shipyard
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

LNA worked with the shipyard and provided design assistance.

2005: Toll NZ
Skills Employed: Naval Architecture

Ferry wave making analysis was undertaken for the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand. LNA provided technical advice to a legal team and created hull models for analysis by SSPA.
